Start with a free preview, not an outdated audit tutorial.
Coursera’s August 2025 announcement replaced auditing with first-module previews for most courses. Financial aid may provide free or reduced-cost access for eligible learners. A subscription trial is a separate route with terms to check.
What happened to the free audit option?
If another guide tells you to search for a hidden audit link that unlocks an entire course, that advice may be outdated. Use the enrollment options actually shown on your chosen course. A first-module preview helps you assess the teaching before deciding whether to continue.
Choose by your goal, not by the word “free”

Need more than the free preview?
A first-module preview is not full-course access or a free certificate. Before paying, check whether financial aid is offered for your chosen course; eligible learners may receive full access and a certificate free or at reduced cost. If you choose paid enrollment, confirm the local price, included credential, billing period and renewal terms shown to you. There is no single monthly price that applies to every certificate or learner.
Estimate your study timeline using our Google certificate cost guide, then compare monthly and annual access. A trial, when offered, is time-limited and is not permanent free access.
Before you start: a five-minute decision checklist
- Choose one specific skill or credential. Avoid buying access before choosing a course.
- Try the preview. Write down one thing you learned and one question it did not answer.
- Estimate your available study hours per week, then check whether the workload fits.
- If considering payment, compare expected paid months with any alternative plan available at checkout. Do not assume an annual plan is cheaper.
- Save the renewal amount and cancellation deadline. If the course does not fit, stop before purchasing.
