An outbound click is not a sale, and a missing analytics event is not proof that nobody clicked. Reconcile the stages separately before deciding whether to change the content, repair tracking, or ask the affiliate network about attribution. This guide provides a diagnostic worksheet, not a promise of commission eligibility.
Keep each system’s definition visible
Record the site analytics event, network click metric, action status, and payout status with their own dates and time zones. Different systems can apply different filtering, consent behavior, and attribution rules. Do not force totals to match by adjusting the data. First document what each number represents and whether the reporting periods are comparable.
Locate the earliest unverified stage
If the page receives few qualified visits, a checkout explanation is not yet the primary bottleneck. If outbound events exist but network clicks do not, inspect the approved link and destination without manufacturing repeated test clicks. If network actions are pending, check the program’s stated review conditions. Use the publisher dashboard or supported exports; a connector that supports advertisers only cannot establish publisher commissions.
Separate diagnosis from proof
A link resolving successfully does not establish that your account is approved, the product is eligible, or a future purchase will be attributed. Save the relevant program status and official terms in your own records. Do not make a self-purchase just to test reporting unless the program explicitly permits it. Escalate unexplained discrepancies with dates and redacted identifiers, not exposed API tokens.
Decision worksheet
| Item | Record or check | Decision rule |
|---|---|---|
| Site visits | Relevant landing-page traffic | Is there enough qualified exposure? |
| Outbound events | Analytics records of leaving the site | Is instrumentation working under consent rules? |
| Network clicks | Publisher-side click report | Is the approved link recognized? |
| Actions and commissions | Pending, approved, reversed, paid | What conditions remain before payment? |
Worked example — illustrative, not measured
Illustrative discrepancy: analytics shows five outbound events and the network shows three clicks. That does not establish two lost commissions. First compare time zones, repeated clicks, consent, filtering, and link destinations. Even three recognized clicks provide no evidence of a qualifying purchase without the downstream action record.
Put this into practice
- Export matching periods from available systems.
- Label missing data as unavailable, not zero.
- Check approval and link identity in the publisher account.
- Choose the next action based on the earliest unsupported stage.
A mistake to avoid
Do not optimize for artificially generated clicks or mark outbound clicks as revenue. Those actions obscure the problem and may violate program conditions.
Basis and limitations
GA4 offers outbound-click measurement through enhanced measurement. An automatic outbound event and a custom affiliate_click event are not interchangeable definitions; inspect the implementation you actually use. Google Analytics: Measure outbound clicks (checked October 22, 2026).
The workflow and illustrative example are editorial recommendations, not measured vendor performance.
